Match the lug's rated conductor cross-section (in mm²) to your actual cable gauge, and match the stud hole size to the terminal or busbar you're connecting to — using an undersized lug risks a poor crimp, while an oversized one won't seat properly on the stud. The correct compression die also needs to match the lug's cross-section for a code-compliant crimp.

Compression lugs are permanently crimped onto the conductor using a hydraulic or manual compression tool, giving a stronger, tamper-resistant joint standard in most industrial installations. Mechanical lugs use a set screw to clamp the conductor instead, which allows tool-free installation but is generally used for lower-current or temporary connections rather than heavy industrial power runs.
